We work hard to acquaint ourselves with new developments in teaching theory and practice. We also try to learn from colleagues both at home and abroad, exploring alternative teaching methods that might be suitable for college-level English in our country. We initial reforms in teaching content and methodology. In this way, we hope to enhance the students’ ability to learn English and apply what they’re learned.

In accordance with our teaching program, we organize our class in such a way as to help students lay a solid foundation for the acquisition of to basic language skills and developments of their communicative ability. Towards this end, we gave sufficient importance to reading, listening, writing and translating. To maximize the use of the limited class time, we add to the intensive reading material some cultural background information as well as exercises in speaking, reading and listening. We also set aside some time for the students to use the language lab for their listening and speaking practice. In our teaching we assign equal importance to the various elements of language learning such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. Our aim is to develop the overall language proficiency of our students.

In the reading class, while teaching basic phonetics, vocabulary and grammar, teachers should organize their teaching on the basis of the assigned text, using the inductive method to elicit student participation. The beginning and ending paragraphs, the topic sentence of the last paragraph and the logical macrostructure of the information through scanning, beginning with the whole, then proceeding to the parts, aiming to be precise while speed-reading. Using the above techniques we’ll enable the students to grasp the details of the whole text and enhance the students’ vocabulary. This will gradually improve their reading skills.

If there is only a smell number of a new word in the reading material, the teacher may ask the students to close their books and test their comprehension by listening. Then the teachers read the passage or play the tape of the passage, after which she asks some questions on the content of the text. In addition, the teacher may also provide some cultural notes or related information to the class presentation.
